What Happens During a DEXA Scan

When you arrive for your appointment, you’ll be guided into the scanning room and asked to lie down on a comfortable, open scanning bed. Unlike MRI or CT scans, there’s no enclosed tunnel or loud noise. You remain fully clothed, however, you will be asked to remove any metal objects such as jewellery, watches, or belts. If certain metal items cannot be removed such as medical implants, that’s perfectly fine, as the scan can still be performed safely. However, for the most accurate results, it’s recommended to remove as much metal as possible before your scan.

The DEXA machine uses two very low-dose X-ray beams that pass over your body. The process is completely painless and you must not move during it. Full-body composition scans take around 11 minutes, while bone densitometry scans alone take about 3-5 minutes.

After the Scan

Once the scan is complete, your results are processed instantly. You’ll receive a detailed report showing your muscle mass, fat percentage, visceral fat levels, and bone mineral density. Many clients use this data to monitor progress from training, diet, or longevity programs.
