What does a DEXA Scan show

A DEXA Scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is one of the most accurate and reliable tools for measuring body composition and bone density. Unlike standard scales or BMI, a DEXA scan provides a detailed picture of what your body is made of, giving insights into your health that go far beyond weight alone.

It breaks your body down into fat, muscle, and bone, showing how much of each you have and where they’re distributed.

Body Fat Percentage

A DEXA scan breaks down your total body fat percentage and shows exactly where fat is distributed. This includes both subcutaneous fat (just under the skin) and visceral fat (around the organs). Visceral fat is especially important, as high levels are linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions.

Lean Muscle Mass

The scan also measures lean muscle mass across different regions of the body including arms, legs, and trunk. This helps identify imbalances or areas of muscle loss, which can be useful for athletes, people recovering from injury, or anyone looking to track muscle growth or strength improvements over time.

Bone Mineral Density (BMD)

DEXA scans measure bone mineral density, which helps detect conditions such as osteopenia and osteoporosis early on. By identifying even small decreases in bone density, a DEXA scan helps you take proactive steps to protect your skeletal health.
